Mary Mirabal is an award-winning artist who lives in Tampa, FL. Mary, a long time art lover, only discovered her own artistic ability in her mid 50’s and has been painting ever since. It wasn’t until she left corporate America that she forged time for herself. She paints exuberant contemporary abstract expressionist works of art that have been shown in numerous exhibitions including those at the Scarfone-Hartley Gallery at the University of Tampa and the Tampa Museum of Art

As a painter who began her new life chapter painting florals, Mary soon found freedom in abstraction, inspired by the likes of Joan Mitchell, Mary Abbott, Elaine de Kooning and her muse, Georgia O’Keeffe. Mirabal paints what she describes as, “…the colors of my soul” as she captures the bold and colorful landscape of northern New Mexico.

Santa Fe, NM is the epicenter of Mirabal’s inspiration. A passionate collector of Native American art for decades, her home is filled with treasures from her many visits to the desert southwest. Mary’s deep love for Santa Fe earned her an invitation to do live paintings at Acosta-Strong Fine Art during the 2018 Canyon Road Spring Art Festival. She spent two months painting plein air style in the courtyard of a charming, historic Santa Fe casita. While there she also secured artist representation at Turquoise Butterfly Gallery.

“I strive to create paintings that speak of the simple beauty existing in everyday life.  My abstract art reflects the colors and emotions of the high desert of New Mexico. I find magic in its mountains and skies painted with highly saturated hues. This sacred place calls to my soul and opens a space for my art to be a true reflection of my free spirit and enthusiasm for life.”

Mirabal’s process involves creating a heavily textured canvas with gel mediums and pastes which give a unique depth to her work. Painting with her hands and palette knives she intuitively develops each piece adding layer upon layer of color. Acrylic and oil pastel marry for art that is bursting with vivid emotion.

Mary’s work is collected internationally and she is represented in Florida Woodfield Fine Art in St. Petersburg and Thistle in Dunedin. She is also represented in NM by Turquoise Butterfly in Santa Fe.

Her upcoming solo exhibits include the Highlands Museum of the Arts (MoTA) in Sebring, FL. Her work has received numerous accolades and awards including Best of Show for Tampa Regional Artists Bay Area 11 show, Honorable Mention in Tampa Regional Artists Forms, Lines & Colors show, Special Merit and Honorable Mention in Light Space & Time Gallery’s Abstracts Art Exhibit and Special Recognition Award for Light Space & Time Gallery’s Botanicals Exhibit.

Mary has also dipped her toes into the fashion design business collaborating with VIDA on a fashion line of handmade, wearable art and accessories using her own original artwork.

She is a member of PAVA (Professional Association of Visual Artists), ISAP (International Society of Acrylic Painters), Las Damas de Artes and Tampa Regional Artists.
